Adapting to Change groups are evolving

New format to support deeper conversations

Our Adapting to Change peer support groups are evolving! Starting in November, the groups will run in a new format to give more space and time for reflection, connection, and meaningful discussion.

Since they began, the Adapting to Change groups have provided a supportive environment for people living with muscular dystrophy to share experiences, learn from one another, and find practical ways to adapt to the changes that come with living with a progressive condition. The new two-part format builds on this foundation, helping conversations go even deeper.

Every session focuses on a specific theme, chosen by group members. Previous topics have included travel, organising care, aids and equipment, accessible transport, and much more. The discussion offers the chance to share stories, explore challenges, and exchange strategies that have helped others in similar situations

Each group will now begin with a 90-minute hybrid discussion, where participants can join either in person at our Coventry Centre or online. About a month later, we’ll hold a follow-up session online. This gives everyone time to reflect, think about what resonated most, and come back with questions or new insights. It’s an opportunity to continue the conversation in a more focused way, allowing for deeper understanding and shared learning. You can attend one or both groups depending on what suits you best.

Mutual support and learning

Group member, Mark, has been involved since the early days. He says:

“When I first heard about the idea for the Adapting to Change group, it just made so much sense to me. When I chat with people at the centre, I’m often left thinking, ‘That was a good conversation. I wish we had more time.’”

He adds that being part of the group has helped him learn from others in ways he didn’t expect.

“I’ve learned so much from fellow service users. There are so many battles that come with disability, and muscular dystrophy in particular. Some of the support you get from people who’ve been through similar things is just of a different order.”

Our therapists will continue to join each session to offer insights and guidance where needed. But the focus remains on peer support – creating a space where everyone can share openly, learn from each other, and feel supported by people who truly understand.

We hope this new format will give everyone more time to reflect, reconnect, and carry the conversation forward.
