Manage your health and keep your strength up between appointments with independent exercise sessions at MD Support Centre!
We are excited to offer service users access to our specialised equipment outside of regular appointments, providing an opportunity to maintain fitness and support well-being. You can now visit our Coventry centre to exercise independently, thanks to our new Therapy Assistant, Suki, who will be on hand to provide support.
Independent exercise for greater health benefits
Research suggests that many people with Muscular Dystrophy experience weakened heart muscles, leading to heart muscle disease and other issues. Light to moderate aerobic exercise like cycling improves heart and lung function without overstraining the muscles, while low-impact aerobic activities can help increase muscle strength and maintain flexibility.
With Suki’s support, you can make the most of our specialist equipment, including the Shapemaster, THERA-Trainer Tigo bike, and GripAble. Taking advantage of our independent exercise sessions between appointments allows you to manage your condition and improve your health.
About the equipment
Shapemaster: this specialised equipment (pictured) uses power-assisted technology to provide passive interval training that exercises major muscle groups and improves joint mobility. By building muscle strength, it helps to prevent falls, promote better circulation, and keep you feeling steadier on your feet.
THERA-Trainer Tigo Bike: a unique bike that provides passive or active exercise for both arms and legs, tailored to individual needs and ability. It helps improve mobility by strengthening muscles, improving joint mobility, and promoting coordination and balance.
GripAble: grip strength is important for everyday tasks, enabling you to maintain your independence. Our GripAble helps to strengthen grip and increase endurance through fun activities and games.
Promoting independence and improving quality of life
Regularly using our exercise equipment between your appointments can bring multiple benefits. In addition to building strength and improving stability, exercise can relax stiff muscles, helping to reduce pain. It helps to reduce the rate of deterioration, making it easier to perform daily tasks such as dressing, cooking, and getting around. By staying active, you’re not only managing your condition but also promoting greater independence in your everyday life. Visiting our welcoming centre also provides additional opportunities to meet and chat with other people with MD.
