Dive into our 2026 Aquatic Exercise classes

Muscular Dystrophy Support Centre’s popular Aquatic Exercise classes return in March and August 2026, offering the perfect mix of exercise, fun, and social connection.

This year’s classes will run in two blocks:

  • Easter taster sessions starting 31 March for two weeks
  • Summer block starting 21 July for six weeks

All sessions are on Tuesday afternoons at the Xcel Centre, just under five minutes from our Coventry centre. We have exclusive use of the pool, so it’s private and relaxed. Participants can enjoy the pool before or after class, and family members or carers can swim too.

What is Aquatic Exercise?

Physiotherapist Dan Foley explains: “Our classes combine cardio, balance, and core-strengthening exercises in water at around breastbone height. The water itself supports and resists your movements, letting you explore safely.”

For people with muscular dystrophy, the benefits are huge. “Buoyancy makes exercises safer and more accessible, while water’s resistance, pressure, and viscosity support balance, strength, flexibility, lung function, and even pain management.”

Why water makes a difference

Dan says the classes provide more than physical benefits. “Water allows people to move safely, building confidence and a sense of freedom. But the social side is just as valuable. Participants enjoy a day out, conversation, and a sense of community, which can boost wellbeing.

“Many are amazed at what they can achieve. I love watching people’s confidence grow and seeing someone realise their own strength – it never gets old. The fun, laughter, and camaraderie are as important as the exercise.”

Aquatic exercise brings freedom and confidenceread Kaye’s story.

How a session works

Classes start gently to help participants get comfortable and socialise. Dan adds:
“We focus on four key areas: cardiorespiratory fitness, balance, flexibility, and strength. Two physiotherapists run each session. One leads, while the other offers support and adapts exercises. Buoyancy aids, floats, weights, and the adjustable pool floor make exercises accessible for everyone.”

Mobility aids are allowed poolside, and we also provide a four-wheeled walker for service users who would like extra support. There’s an accessible pool lift with full support from our team, making getting in and out of the pool easy and dignified. You can wear swimming shorts and a swim shirt if preferred. Carers or family helping with changing are welcome to use the other half of the pool for a swim during the class.

Facilities and accessibility

The Xcel Centre offers:

  • Large, flat, accessible car park
  • Accessible showers and changing rooms, including private sections
  • Pool lift for easy entry and exit
  • Café for refreshments
  • Less than five minutes from our Coventry centre
