Staying active with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions can feel challenging. Traditional exercise classes may not always feel safe or accessible. Our weekly seated exercise sessions are carefully designed to meet the needs of people with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions. All exercises are safe, effective, and adaptable to your pace. You can also practice the movements at home, maintaining progress between sessions and building confidence.
Benefits of seated exercise
Seated classes provide a wide range of physical and mental benefits:
- Flexibility and posture: Controlled motions help preserve joint mobility, reduce stiffness, and strengthen postural muscles. Improved posture and stability can reduce discomfort, improve balance, and support confidence in daily movement.
- Muscle strength and function: Seated arm and leg exercises with and without resistance-band movements help maintain muscle strength. This can make everyday tasks easier – from sitting, balance and control, to lifting objects, standing from a chair, or walking short distances.
- Cardiovascular health: slightly more vigorous rhythmic movements, interval training and moving to music get your heart pumping safely, improving circulation, stamina, and overall energy levels. Regular aerobic activity also supports lung function, which can be particularly important for people living with MD.

Our seated exercise class takes place every Tuesday at 2pm, led by our physiotherapists Ulrike and Siobhan. There’s no need to book, simply drop in on the day.
