Neuromuscular conditions remain underrepresented in healthcare education, leaving many future professionals with limited experience of delivering person-centred care for people living with long-term, progressive conditions.
To help address this, MD Support Centre is today launching a new Clinical & Community Experience Pathway. This innovative programme combines specialist clinical learning with lived experience, helping prepare future healthcare professionals to deliver truly person-centred, inclusive care.
The need
Future healthcare professionals often have limited opportunities to learn about the realities of living with long-term, progressive conditions. This can lead to gaps in confidence, understanding and the delivery of person-centred care.
By creating opportunities to learn alongside people living with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions, the pathway helps bridge this gap through real-world experience in a specialist setting.
Our response
MD Support Centre has developed a Clinical & Community Experience Pathway – a structured, tiered programme supporting individuals at every stage of their journey. Launched today, it creates a clear progression from early awareness through to clinical contribution and long term engagement.
The pathway supports individuals at every stage of their journey:
- Explore: Work experience for young people considering a career in healthcare.
- Insight: Short clinical learning experiences and guided observation.
- Placement: Supervised clinical placements for healthcare students.
- Associate: Volunteer opportunities for qualified clinicians.
- Community: Volunteering roles that strengthen inclusion, connection and community engagement.
What makes our approach different?
Our programme combines specialist clinical learning with the lived experience of our community. Focusing on neuromuscular conditions, it integrates clinical and community learning within a supportive, values-led environment. This helps participants develop the knowledge, confidence and understanding needed to provide compassionate, inclusive care.
The pathway supports young people exploring healthcare careers, students developing their clinical skills, qualified professionals contributing their expertise, and volunteers strengthening community engagement.
