The MD Support Centre is pleased to announce a major expansion to its Coventry Centre to meet the growing demand for services.
From April 2025, the Charity has taken on an additional unit at its Westwood House base, doubling its current space. This marks an exciting step forward in the charity’s mission to provide specialist therapy services for adults with muscle-wasting conditions.
Muscle-wasting conditions affect around 110,000 people across the UK, including approximately 12,000 adults in the Midlands alone. Many experience a sharp decline in access to NHS-funded physiotherapy after the age of 19, leaving them without the ongoing care they need to manage their condition effectively. As the only dedicated provider of specialist therapy for adults with neuromuscular conditions in the region, MD Support Centre is committed to bridging this gap.
MD Support Centre: Expansion will help enhance care
Sarah Ann Moore, CEO of MD Support Centre, said: “With over 600 registered service users and more than 80 therapy appointments delivered each week, demand for our services continues to grow. By expanding our clinic, we can enhance the care and support we offer to our service users and also help more people living with MD across the Midlands and beyond.”
The expansion will provide significantly more space for therapy, potentially allowing an increase in the number of treatment beds, improving access to vital physical therapies. Additional private treatment rooms will be available, offering greater flexibility for one-on-one sessions, annual reviews, and specialist consultations. With more space, there is also the potential to introduce complementary therapies alongside existing physical therapy services, further enhancing the support available to service users.
Beyond therapy, this expansion will create new social opportunities. Sarah said: “Our Centre is more than just a place for treatment, we want people to feel part of something bigger. We aim for our clinics to be a place where people with MD can connect, share experiences, and support one another. The additional space will enable us to host more social events, peer support sessions, and group activities, fostering a greater sense of community for those who rely on our services.”
The expansion to the additional unit is on a temporary lease to meet the increased demand for support. This will enable the charity to ensure it meets clinical and community needs while maintaining flexibility.
MD Support Centre provides specialised therapies and support for people with muscular dystrophy. In addition to its Coventry Centre, it operates satellite locations to bring therapies closer to the people who need them. Find out how to get a referral.
