What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a physical therapy aimed at reducing pain, stiffness and aching helping patients to reach their maximum physical potential. We use a wide range of techniques such as: deep tissue massage, mobilisation of joints, manipulation, ultrasound, exercise regimes, hot and cold therapy to help ease pain and stiffness and encourage blood flow. Osteopaths are experts in hands-on treatment.
Osteopaths are medical professionals who are trained for 4-5 years. The title is protected and all Osteopaths are registered with the General Osteopathic Council (as doctors are with the General Medical Council). Physical Therapy is crucial if you live with a neuromuscular disease to enable you to live as full a life as possible.
What Happens at your appointment?
To have osteopathy at the Centre you can be referred directly by your consultant, GP or Physiotherapist, confirming your diagnosis.
Before any treatment, a full medical history and assessment will be taken to identify the site and cause of any pain or contracture. We may refer you for any other clinical tests we feel necessary.
The first assessment and consultation will last about 1 hour and follow-on sessions between 45 minutes to 1 hour.

- Minimise contractures through stretching techniques and exercises
- Improve respiratory capacity through breathing exercises
- Advise on equipment and aids
- Maintain the best possible structural balance to prevent secondary problems
